...to Amanda McMillan, the Managing Director of Glasgow International Airport with regards to her letter in the Evening Times about the news article "Cash crisis airport's T2 to shut in days' (November 13). Amanda McMillan stated there is no 'cash crises' at Glasgow Airport. Can she then tell us then why BAA have used the excuse of 'cost cutting' for closing Terminal 2 and the second runway, that's runway 09/27? Maybe Amanda McMillan can also tell us why Glasgow appears to be the only airport BAA are cutting costs at? BAA are investing £40 million at Edinburgh, £7 million at Southampton and £500 million between London Heathrow and London Stansted. That does not look like 'cost cutting' to me; more like investing in the future. Anyone else notice a certain BAA airport not getting a slice of the cake? Its no surprise the only two airports BAA have not invested in recently are Gatwick and Glasgow. BAA have recently sold Gatwick after being forced to by the Competition Commission. All the signs say Glasgow is next to be sold. That is the real reason for running our cities main airport into the ground. Amanda also stated BAA have, within the last 12 months opened to £30 million Skyhub extension. Well Skyhub opened early October 2008, its now November 2009. Anyone can see that is more than 12 months. BAA last invested in Glasgow International Airport in February 2007, when they announced plans for the Skyhub extension. Nothing has been spent on Glasgow since, apart from the daily running costs. In her letter to the Evening Times; Amanda also said Terminal 2 was 'little used'. That may be true, however ask yourself this; why is it 'little used'? Maybe if BAA took some interest in developing Glasgow's European network of routes Terminal 2 would not be 'little used'. Four years ago easyJet announced 4 new European routes from Glasgow, one of them was a daily flight to Berlin. At that time easyJet stated that the Glasgow to Berlin service was to 'test the water for European flights from Glasgow' and if successful they will add further new routes to Barcelona, Madrid, Milan, Paris and other major European cities. easyJet's Glasgow to Berlin flight has been a huge success, carrying up to 9,000 passengers in a single month, yet all the new promised easyJet routes are operating from BAA's Edinburgh airport. Its also very interesting to note that BAA would afford to do a deal with Ryanair to open a large base at Edinburgh, yet BAA had no interest in doing the same at Glasgow. Maybe if BAA Glasgow got Ryanair to fly from the airport Terminal 2 would not be 'little used'. There is no long term for BAA in Glasgow and BAA know it. That is why they are pricing airlines out of Glasgow and effectively forcing them to fly from Edinburgh. The sooner the Competition Commission force threw the sale Glasgow, like they did at Gatwick, the better for everyone."
"Nobody knows what the new process they have introduced really looks like" BAA director Mike Forster told Reuters on the sidelines of the Global Airport Development 2009 conference in Berlin
"Many people think that the break up of BAA is the end of the story and everything is fixed" he said
