Dr Laura Wyness, British Nutrition Foundation senior nutrition scientist, said: "The UKUK Eatwell Plate classifies the potato in the carbohydrate category because of its high starch content but that doesn't mean it isn't a useful source of micro-nutrients or isn't low in fat if it is boiled or baked. And of course, although it is a starchy carbohydrate, the potato is a vegetable too."

...There is a range of fatty acids that come under this umbrella and they are not all medicinally equal. "We know that long-chain omega-3 in oily fish is good for health and we know that many people don't like eating oily fish. But there are products that either contain very small amounts or have short-chain omega-3, which most of us get enough of because it's in vegetable oil. 'Yet you sometimes see products labelled as having 'added omega-3', which is a bit misleading.'The body is supposed to convert short-chain omega-3 into long-chain but it doesn't do it efficiently; this is where oily fish and supplements can help."
