'Modern human rights jurisprudence was not intended to obliterate religious beliefs held for millennia.' Mr Dingemans said she could not go against her faith and take an active part to enable same-sex unions."
...decision said: "The council were not taking disciplinary action against Ms Ladele for holding her religious beliefs. 'They did so because she was refusing to carry out civil partnership ceremonies and this involved discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation. 'The council were entitled to take the view that they were not willing to connive in that practice by relieving Ms Ladele of the duties, notwithstanding that her refusal was the result of her strong and genuinely-held Christian beliefs.' Mr Dingemans said the EAT had noted that fundamental changes in attitudes, particularly regarding sexual orientation, were happening very fast 'implicitly suggesting that the appellant was outmoded and wrong in her views'. Helen Mountfield, for the council, said it was not right that Islington did not give respect or value to the views of orthodox Christians towards marriage. 'The council's view is that the views of religious groups must be accommodated without encroaching on the rights of other people.' She said the council had not discriminated against Ms Ladele on the grounds of religion. The reason why she was disciplined was because she refused to extend her services to same sex couples. 'Had not the EAT corrected the ET's misappreciation and misapplication of the law, it would have created a major practical problem in the workplace.' She said it would have resulted in employers being unable to enforce any management instructions against employees who claimed to be precluded from obeying through religion or principle."
