...Hospitals said: "Patients that are being cared for within an intensive care setting are, by definition, very ill and their condition will vary over short periods of time. The individual patient is always central to any decision that is made relating to their treatment and care. 'ECMO was discussed with the family at several points and was deemed unnecessary and inappropriate at that time.' Dr Jane Eddleston from the North WestNorth West Critical Care Network and Clinical Director Critical Care at Manchester Royal Infirmary and one of the region's experts on this treatment said: 'ECMO is a treatment which is mainly used to support cardiac surgery. The swine flu virus has brought ECMO into the public eye as a possible treatment. Evidence so far shows that ECMO has a limited benefit for a small number of patients with respiratory failure. 'Referral guidelines exist for patients in North West hospitals to be considered for treatment if clinical staff believe it would be of benefit.'"
