University College London's Institute of Neurology geneticist Professor John Hardy said the findings were fascinating. "It's fantastic demonstration of natural selection. 'Because people who have this mutation were protected from this fatal disease their proportion in society increased massively.' But he said a similar resistance to CJD would be less likely to develop. He said: 'In Papua New Guinea kuru became the major cause of death, so there was a clear survival advantage and the selection pressure was enormous. 'Here in Britain the numbers with CJD are very small and so the selection pressures will be less.'"

...Cue chairman and Todd Energy managing director Richard Tweedie said: "Cue's investment in the Maari field has created outstanding results. "The production from Maari puts Cue squarely back in the camp of significant production from New Zealand's largest oilfield." Cue had graduated from an explorer to a production company in New Zealand, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, but the aim now was to keep growing, Mr Tweedie said. Maari is producing between 30,000 and 40,000 barrels of oil a day from a 50 million barrel field, which cost about $1 billion to develop. Cue de-listed in New Zealand in 2005 because listing rules then were less flexible than in Australia and the company wanted to avoid the added cost of a dual listing. Now, New Zealand rules are in line with Australia and Cue is returning to the market. The offshore Taranaki Maari oil field, about 80km from the coast, began production in February. Two further discoveries have since been made at the Maari M2A sands and the adjacent Manaia field. With Maari, they amount to more than 100 million barrels of recoverable oil. Earlier this month the partners in Manaia decided to commercially develop the field. Manaia and Maari M2A could be tied in when there was spare capacity at the floating production station at Maari, which might be two or three years away, as Maari production declined as expected, Mr Tweedie said. "It extends the higher production profile as well as the life of Maari." It was hard to say if there could be calls on Cue shareholders for extra money to help develop the Manaia field, but Mr Tweedie said it was doubtful because Cue had "pretty useful cashflows" from producing fields. Last year Cue made gross profits of almost A$22 million (NZ$27.1m), but it made a A$20.9m loss after writing down exploration spending in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Gross profit in the previous year was A$30.8m, when oil prices were higher. But given Maari was now in full production, the profit in the coming year would be "quite a good one", although Mr Tweedie would not elaborate. Cue was founded by Geoff Albers, who recently left the Cue board, although he retains a large shareholding in the company. New Zealand's largest locally owned energy producer, Todd Energy, owns 27 per cent and is committed to retaining its holding, which has grown in recent times as a result of cash issues to raise money from shareholders.
