In an interview with on Sunday from Beijing, Mrs Looi said: "No one will be able to understand the anguish that his dad and I have gone through. 'David is such an intelligent child and we had pinned all our hopes on him.' Mrs Looi, who is in her 60s, added: 'Anything David wanted, we'd do our best to give it to him. He did not lack anything - material things, money, love and attention.' She has a daughter, 32, who runs a wedding planner company and a florist business. Said Mrs Looi: 'Thankfully, my daughter - who is married - is able to help my husband with the business in Singapore.' She said that her husband and her had moved their business to Shenyang and Harbin in China in 2004 to provide her son with 'a new environment'. She added wryly: 'Ironically, this move (expansion) caught the attention of the Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong).' Mr Looi was mentioned by PM Lee for his entrepreneurial spirit at the National Day Rally speech in 2006. Mrs Looi said: 'I was so happy then, and hoped that it would encourage David in his efforts to change for the better.' The family has since moved its business to Beijing."
