'Year of progress' for G20-Darling

Topping the agenda over two days of talks will be continuing efforts to coax world economies out of recession, and preparing for the UN summit on climate change next month in Copenhagen. Work got under way in earnest last night during a working dinner hosted by the Chancellor...

...he said. "But in the space of 12 months, we've made a lot of progress. After years of painstakingly slow progress, we've now agreed to reform global financial regulation, we've agreed global rules on bank pay, and we are cracking down on tax havens. "The G20 allows us to work together on a wider stage and reap even greater benefits." One of the biggest challenges for G20 ministers this weekend is making progress towards a lasting global deal on climate change in Copenhagen. The Chancellor has made it clear that there is a lot of work yet to do and that countries must honour their pledges. In St Andrews he wants to work towards a $100bn global deal to help the emerging economies develop clear and efficient technologies in the effort to reduce carbon emissions and minimise global warming to a maximum two degree increase. "So the G20 must push for a deal on climate financing and governance-this is an essential part of tackling climate change. The road ahead will be difficult, there are arguments still to be won. This is a reason to redouble our efforts," said Mr Darling. There was tight security around the Fairmont Hotel by St Andrews where the summit is being held. Police checkpoints were set up with sniffer dogs and police officers checking all vehicles as they entered the hotel grounds. Despite the security operation at St Andrews Bay, there was little disruption to traffic on the main St Andrews to Crail road. Hundreds of people are expected to take part in a march this morning to highlight their opposition to their opposition to G20 policies, although police have said they expect all demonstrations to pass off peacefully. The summit will draw to a close this afternoon when the official communique is agreed by all nations and released."
